Best Minnesota Themed Cocktails

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Hello and welcome to my latest blog post: Best Minnesota Themed Cocktails. Read on as I share some tasty Mid West cocktail recipes that are sure to do the Land of 10,000 Lakes proud. Together we can sip our way through Minnesota’s Bootleg Whiskey Cocktail (they had me at whiskey). Explore a Minnesota Slammer (this is not your Alabama Slammer)! Sing along and drink a Purple People Eater (if you haven’t heard the song go listen to it now. I’ll wait. It’s kooky but cute, right?!). And last, but not least, the Purple Viking cocktail. It’s Minnesota themed cocktails, of course I am going to create a Viking drannnnnk!

Bootleg Whiskey Cocktail

Fill cocktail shaker with ice. Add 3 ounces whiskey,1 ounce simple syrup, 1 ounce lime juice and 1 ounce lemon juice. Cover and shake until shaker becomes frosty and most of the ice has melted. Strain ingredients into cocktail glass filled with ice. Keeping with the Bootleg theme I choose to use a mason jar as the cocktail glass. Top off with lemon lime soda. Garnish with lemons or limes or both as desired!

Minnesota was a hot spot for smuggling in alcohol during the Prohibition Period. Canada was more than happy to share their wares by way of the border, the Great Lakes and many other creative modes of transportation.

Minnesota Slammer

Add 2 ounces cherry brandy, 2 ounces peach schnapps, 2 ounces vodka and 2 ounces sweet & sour to cocktail shaker filled with ice. Cover and shake until cocktail shaker becomes frosty and most of the ice has melted. Strain ingredients into Collins glass filled with ice. Garnish with limes as desired.

This is my version of the Minnesota Slammer. There are a variety of recipes out there with various ingredients. One of the cocktails I shared for Best Alabama Themed Cocktails was an Alabama Slammer. That drink is usually served as a shot and I modified it to be a sipping cocktail. If I’m going to be drinking them I think it’s okay for changes. What do you think about changing a recipe? Shot or sipper?

Purple People Eater

It was a one eyed, one horned, flying, purple people eater – Sheb Wooley released the song in 1958. Ugh, now that song is stuck in my head. How about you? Sorry, not sorry! Growing up in Minnesota that song was everywhere. I wasn’t born when the song was released, but it was still going strong decades later when I lived there.

Fill cocktail shaker with ice. Add 2 ounces vodka, 2 ounces blue curacao,2 ounces cranberry juice and 1 ounce grenadine. Cover and shake until shaker becomes frosty and most of the ice has melted. Strain ingredients into martini glass. No garnish, just singing!

Purple Viking

Add 2 ounces southern comfort, 2 ounces blueberry liqueur, 2 ounces sloe gin, 1 ounce blue curacao and 1 ounce lime juice into cocktail shaker filled with ice. Cover and shake until shaker becomes frosty and most of the ice has melted. Strain ingredients into cocktail glass filled with ice. Garnish with limes as desired.

Scandinavian roots run deep in Minnesota, and so does the love of Vikings. There is still a heated debate if Vikings settled in Minnesota, but there is no debate regarding the founding of the Minnesota Vikings National Football Team in 1960. The Vikings are in Minnesota!

Best Minnesota Themed Cocktails

Thank you for joining me as we explored Best Minnesota Themed Cocktails. Together we discovered not only tasty cocktail recipes with a bit of Viking history (the Viking Cocktail), a catchy tune that keeps playing and playing and playing in my head (Purple People Eater Cocktail), the difference between a Minnesota slammer and an Alabama slammer (Minnesota Slammer Cocktail), Minnesota’s bootleg history (Bootleg Whiskey Cocktail) and so much more. I have shared a couple purple cocktail recipes. Which means they have blue curacao in them. It the only way I know to make a cocktail purple. Did your favorite Minnesota Themed Cocktail make my list? If not, please share in the comments. I love discovering new treasures.

I highly recommend Mackinac Island. Its an island that has a State Park. The State Park has Arch Rock, which reminds me of a bridge. And you all know that I love bridges. Let’s travel Michigan style!
