I love bridges and Mississippi has a lot of them, so I am sharing the Biloxi Bay Bridge. It is not the only bridge I will be sharing with you today.

Originally constructed in 1962, the bridge has seen its share of natural disasters. The current bridge you see in the photo is a reconstructed version after Hurricaine Katrina damaged the bridge. After repairs the bridge reopened in November of 2007. The Bridge has 6 lanes of traffic connecting Biloxi and Ocean Springs plus a path on the Gulf side of the bridge for pedestrians and bicyclists to cross. I love when amazing travel adventures have amazing views.

Biloxi Beach boasts itself to be Mississippi’s most famous beach, and I am not going to argue that point. With beauty comes fame. I am however, going to share it for your must see and do list when traveling in Mississippi.

Biloxi Beach offers an array of family activities and not family activities, including boat tours, charters, kayaking and more. Not a water person?! Well, there are 26 miles of gorgeous white sand beaches along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. White sand beaches just take relaxation to a whole other level. Am I right? General admission to the beach and parking is FREE! Well, at least it was free at the time of this post.

The Biloxi Lighthouse started as a civilian operated lighthouse from 1848 to 1939. It was one of the first cast iron lighthouses in the South and one of the first to employ women light keepers (Girl Power). Visiting the lighthouse you can learn the history of Maria Younghans that tended the lighthouse for 53 years.

In 1939, the U.S. Coast Guard assumed responsibility for its operations (I wonder if any of the Coast Guard staff were female?) The city of Biloxi was given the deed to the lighthouse in 1968. It was at that time opened to the public for tours and as a museum. Visit their website to see a real time, live feed from inside the lighthouse.

The Byram Swinging Bridge was built in 1905 as a business venture to be able to cross the Pearl River. The bridge was a way to transport goods via trucks and cars. The bridge was deemed unsafe for travel and transport and was closed to traffic in 1987. In 2015 the bridge was reopened as a pedestrian footbridge.

The bridge is an integral part of the community. So much so, they host a Swinging Bridge Festival. If you are in the area May 4 – May 5, 2024 I highly recommend attending. No details are available at this time.

The Clark Creek Natural Area is located in southwestern Mississippi and covers over 700 acres. What’s more amazing and the reason it is on my to see list is that the area offers over 50 waterfalls. How do you find the waterfalls you might ask? Follow the trail. The Clark Creek trail is listed as moderately challenging, and is less than 5 miles out and back. Moderately challenging? 5 miles out and back? I can do that! So can a lot of people. This trail is very popular, and often crowded. But, yes the views are that amazing and worth the hike.

“I went to the crossroads. Fell down on my knees.” Robert Johnson, legendary blues guitar player (click here to hear his music on YouTube), is said to have sold his soul to the devil in exchange for amazing guitar playing skills.This exchange took place while he was standing at the Crossroads. Other legends carry the exchange a bit father and say Robert’s soul wasn’t the only thing the devil took. Supernatural guitar playing skills came with a cost. The mysterious death of his wife is often blamed on the devil. I guess the devil wanted Robert to feel blue while playing the blues. His own mysterious death might have been the result of the devil getting tired of waiting. Those are just rumors though, right?!

The Crossroads landmark stands to this day as a of the beckon of the blues. In the surrounding area are restaurants, shops, and bars to hear some devilish blues. Fair warning, be careful what you wish for while visiting!

Speaking of Blues Music and where it started I highly recommend visiting the Delta Blues Museum. The Delta Blues Museum is located in Clarksdale at the intersection of Highway 49 and Highway 61 (sound familiar). The Crossroads is the perfect place for the perfect museum. I love blues music, and the Delta Blues Museum features the music’s history through exhibits, tours, events and more. The museum has received several awards for a reason! Highly recommend putting this adventure on your must see, do and hear list.

The Mississippi Petrified Forest and museum can be found on private land but is open for visitors. The museum, also located on the property, states the Forest was formed over 36 million years ago. Amazing what water, the environment and the landscape can create. Hours to visit and explore change from season to season, but the paved trail throughout the forest is very well maintained and can be explored all year long. Visit their website for hours, ticket prices and more.

Mississippi’s very own Grand Canyon. Or Little Canyon by the locals. Red Bluff, which ever canyon name you want to use, and is located in Foxworth. A moderately challenging trail that changes every time you visit. The listing and changes has to do with the fact that Red Bluff is rapidly eroding. They call it Red Bluff because of its red and orange colors. Those colors might decide to go home with you. The soil stains, so fair warning, but I think the views are worth a stain or two.

The building that is now home to Under the Hill Saloon has been a brothel (I think most old buildings were a brothel at one time or another), a general store, a saloon and more. I prefer it being a saloon. I have always loved a bit of history, with a strong tasty beverage. Highly recommend visiting. Highly recommend ordering an Old Fashioned. Tell them WonderLesch sent you!
